A vehicle was driven into crowds at a market in Magdeburg, northeastern Germany, just one hour before Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig on Friday, leaving at least two dead and 60 injured. Authorities described the incident as a deliberate attack.
Coach Vincent Kompany struggled to discuss Bayern’s 5-1 victory, saying “it’s almost impossible to talk about football tonight”. Marco Rose also expressed his condolences, calling it an “unfortunate day”.
The planned Christmas ceremony at the Allianz Arena was canceled due to the incident. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen asked fans to observe a minute of silence for the victims.
Bayern dominated the match after a slow start, leading 3-1 at halftime before completing the rout. Despite their win, Kompany expressed hope that next year will bring more “wins for peace”. The team is now seven points clear at the top of the table.
