Alex Foster, an 18-year-old defensive lineman for Baylor University’s football team, has been killed in a shooting in Greenville, Mississippi. Foster was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside a car and died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Foster, who stood 6-foot-5 and weighed 292 pounds, had previously redshirted his freshman season due to COVID-19 restrictions. He participated in the team’s spring workouts last month.
The Baylor community is mourning Foster’s death, with coach Dave Aranda and athletic director Mack Rhoades releasing a joint statement expressing their condolences to Foster’s family and friends. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Alex’s family and all those who loved him,” they said.
Foster was a high school football player at St. Joseph Catholic-Greenville and was considered one of the top recruits in his class, ranking 152nd nationally by On3. His death has been met with an outpouring of support from his alma mater and the wider community, with the school releasing a statement saying “we extend our prayers and deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Alex Foster”.
The Baylor Bears are set to open their 2025 season at home against Auburn on August 29.
