The BBC’s BAFTA coverage was edited to remove some jokes made by host David Tennant about Donald Trump. In the live show, Tennant joked that it was unlikely Trump had seen The Apprentice movie due to its high rating, comparing him to Beetlejuice. However, when introducing The Brutalist film, he joked that Trump’s hair in the movie was “the boldest film” apart from the actual film itself.
Tennant’s opening remarks also included jokes about sequels and other films. Despite cutting some of these jokes, the BBC’s live show did feature some jokes about Trump. The decision to remove the material has sparked criticism, with some arguing that it is a sign of “kowtowing” to Trump.
The author suggests that the BBC should air the full, unedited coverage on iPlayer and then broadcast an edited version on TV.
