BBC says journalist trapped in Vietnam due to passport issues
The BBC has expressed “deep concern” about a journalist who has been unable to leave Vietnam for several months.
The journalist, a Vietnamese national, visited the country to renew their passport but is now facing problems with their identity document and ID card.
The corporation urges Vietnamese authorities to allow the journalist to return home immediately.
UK’s position on media freedom clear
The UK Foreign Office supports journalists and criticises harassment of media in Vietnam.
Despite economic growth, Vietnam has a poor record on human rights and tight controls over the media.
Vietnam is one-party state with limited freedom for journalists. The BBC says it will continue to raise concerns about media freedom in Vietnam until the journalist is allowed to return home.
