Instead, he recommends exploring satellite ISPs like Starlink, which can be pricey ($80-$120/month) but offers reliable connectivity through satellite technology.
For those who don’t want to invest in satellite internet, alternative options include power banks (portable chargers), portable power stations (cheaper than generators), flashlights, and battery-operated radios. These can provide essential backup solutions for short-term outages.
Another crucial aspect of disaster preparedness is having a financial plan. Chris Reynolds, an emergency management expert, advises keeping a small amount of emergency cash in secure locations, such as waterproof containers or safe deposit boxes. Prepaid debit cards or informal cooperatives with neighbors can also serve as alternative means to access funds during emergencies.
Creating a family emergency plan is also essential. Jeremy Gocke, CEO of Entropy Survival, recommends setting up a “pre-internet failure family plan” that includes:
