The Chicago Bears have denied permission for the Dallas Cowboys to interview coach Mike McCarthy, according to a source close to ESPN. The Bears had sought McCarthy’s input regarding their head coaching vacancy, but now plan to speak with Pete Carroll instead.
Carroll, 73, has expressed interest in returning to the sidelines in 2025 and is expected to be interviewed by the Bears on Thursday. Other candidates for the job include Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
Bears general manager Ryan Poles stated that all options are on the table, including trading for a coach to fill the vacancy. The team is looking for a candidate with clear vision, a developmental mindset, and strong game management skills.
McCarthy’s contract expires Wednesday, but the Cowboys have exclusive negotiating rights through January 14. Despite this, McCarthy has said he “absolutely” wants to return to the Dallas franchise. The two will meet this week to discuss the team’s direction.
Poles emphasized that winning is key for any successful coach, and that developing young players is essential to achieving success. With a new coaching search underway, the Bears are seeking a candidate who can build on the team’s foundation.
