Beat Insomnia with Push-Ups, Says New Research for Over-60s

One in five older people struggles with insomnia, a problem that can have negative effects on health, work and day-to-day life. However, new research suggests that push-ups and planks may be the solution.

A study published in the journal Family Medicine And Community Health found that strength training, including resistance exercises like dumbbells or body weight exercises such as push-ups and planks, was more effective at reducing sleeplessness than other types of exercise.

In 24 clinical trials involving over 2,000 people aged 60 and over, researchers discovered that strength training improved sleep quality by an average of 5.75 points on the Global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (GPSQI). In contrast, aerobic exercise improved sleep quality by just 3.76 points, while combination exercises had a smaller impact.

The study’s findings support previous research that shows exercise can improve sleep, but highlights the benefits of strength training specifically. The researchers concluded that exercising to strengthen muscles is the most effective way to enhance sleep quality.

The UK’s trade body for physical activity, ukactive, welcomed the study’s results, saying that physical activity plays a significant role in mental and physical health. They highlighted the importance of making exercise accessible to everyone, regardless of age or ability, with the goal of becoming the most active nation in Europe.

With up to £1 billion in healthcare savings and an additional £3.6 billion in GDP through increased productivity, the benefits of regular exercise are clear.
