A unique situation unfolded at Chase Field in Phoenix on Tuesday night, when a colony of bees decided to camp out atop backstop netting, delaying the start of the Los Angeles Dodgers-Arizona Diamondbacks game by nearly two hours. The bees’ sudden appearance forced fans to evacuate high-priced seats behind home plate.
Beekeeper Matt Hilton was called in to rescue the situation. He used a spray to stun the pests and then sucked them up with a vacuum, earning cheers from the crowd. Even more impressive, Hilton was asked to throw out the ceremonial first pitch after the game finally started at 8:35 pm MT, a delay of one hour and 55 minutes from its original start time.
The Diamondbacks went on to win the game in extra innings, 4-3, but it was an eventful night. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo praised MLB for delaying the game to ensure everyone’s safety inside Chase Field.
