Apple TV+ sci-fi thriller Severance has fans already speculating about the plot for season two after the intense premiere episode. Executive producer Ben Stiller and star Adam Scott sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss the making of the show’s opening scene, which took four to five months to complete.
The scene shows Mark S., played by Scott, sprinting through Lumon Industries’ “severed” floor, a maze-like area that feels like a miles-long white corridor. The shot was more technically challenging than expected, involving a bulky camera equipment called a “bolt arm” and multiple shots of the hallway set.
According to Stiller, the team didn’t want to rely on visual effects for backgrounds and environments but needed them for this specific scene due to the camera equipment’s space requirements. They also chose not to use a Steadicam, as it would have been too cumbersome for the operator to keep up with Mark’s escalating pace.
The goal was to create an exciting and fun opening that hinted at what was to come in season two. The scene felt like a “big reveal” to the audience, setting the stage for Mark’s journey to unravel the mysteries behind Lumon Industries.
Fans will have to wait until next week to see more of the puzzle pieces fall into place. New episodes of Severance air Fridays on Apple TV+.
