Behind the Scenes of What If…? Season 3

Marvel Animation’s What If…? returns for its third and final season, exploring the multiverse with new stories. The show’s creative team, director Bryan Andrews and Marvel Studios’ Head of Television Brad Winderbaum, reflect on saying goodbye to the genre-bending series.

“It makes me feel happy and sad at the same time,” says Winderbaum. “After three seasons, many people have grown attached to these characters, especially Uatu, the Watcher.” The show’s closure marks a significant milestone for Marvel Studios Animation, which was born from What If…?

The season’s final episodes are ambitious, weaving stories that echo throughout the Marvel multiverse. Andrews explains they aimed to push boundaries and get “wilder” with each episode. This season introduces Storm as the Goddess of Thunder, a twist inspired by Winderbaum’s work on X-Men ’97.

“We’re lensing the MCU in different ways through animation,” says Winderbaum. “This show is a labor of love that could only exist in animation.” What If…? Season 3 is now streaming on Disney+.
