Beloved LA Icon Closes After 100+ Years in Downtown LA

The Original Pantry Cafe, a Los Angeles institution since 1924, has closed its doors for the final time after over 100 years in business. The cafe’s last service took place on Sunday.

The restaurant was previously owned by former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and is now managed by his estate. In January, workers were notified that the Pantry would be sold, sparking concerns about job security. Union representatives from UNITE HERE Local 11 requested job protection in a contract with the new buyer.

However, the Pantry has demanded that workers give up their demand for job security and union representation if the restaurant changes hands. The estate called these demands “totally unacceptable” as they would harm the ability to find a buyer.

Despite this, many customers are rallying around the cafe, showing their support with long lines of people waiting to get one last meal. Employees have expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and camaraderie from regulars.

The trust managing the restaurant is in the process of trying to sell the property, but it’s unclear what will happen next. The closure marks the end of an era for this beloved LA landmark.
