Beloved LA Institution The Original Pantry Closes After 100 Years

The Original Pantry Cafe in Downtown LA has closed its doors after a century of serving classic American breakfast to loyal customers. Former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan bought the restaurant in 1981 and operated it as a passion project until his death. The administrative trust overseeing his estate determined that selling the property will fund the charitable nonprofit Riordan Foundation’s education work for low-income students.

On its final day, fans flocked to the diner, sharing memories of their favorite meals and bonding with waiters they’ve known for decades. Patrons, including those who had dined there with family members or shared special moments with loved ones, were filled with a mix of joy and sorrow.

The restaurant’s closure comes after labor negotiations failed to secure better work protections for employees in the event of new ownership. Workers, many of whom have dedicated years to the Pantry, are uncertain about their future plans. “We’re all sad,” said Brenda De La Rosa, one of the last cashiers. “They gave us a three-week notice.”
