Chicago Bears’ general manager Ryan Poles announced Monday that Lions’ offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will become the team’s new head coach. Johnson, 38, has been with the Lions for three seasons and led the team to top-10 offenses twice, including a No. 1 ranking in points scored this season.
Johnson is tasked with elevating quarterback Caleb Williams, who expressed interest in working with the former Lions coach. Under Johnson’s guidance, Jared Goff improved from a 46 Total QBR in 2021 to 63 in his first season as offensive coordinator. The Bears are looking to make significant changes after finishing last in the NFC North standings.
Johnson’s coaching style and ability to limit sacks have been key to Detroit’s success. He will inherit a team with a projected $74.8 million in salary cap space, including four picks in the top 72 and the No. 10 overall pick. Johnson starts assembling his staff, with former New Orleans Saints coach Dennis Allen leading candidate for defensive coordinator.
The Bears conducted a virtual interview with Johnson on January 11 and also spoke with 17 candidates for the head coaching position, including Ron Rivera, Mike McCarthy, and Eddie George. The team is committed to finding the right fit and has expressed willingness to consider unconventional candidates.
Johnson’s arrival marks a significant change for the Bears, who have struggled to find success in recent years. He will face challenges in elevating Williams and building a winning team, but his innovative coaching style may be just what the Bears need to turn things around.
