Ben Simmons has agreed to a contract buyout with the Brooklyn Nets and plans to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers once he clears waivers, according to sources. The 28-year-old three-time All-Star joins the Clippers as a high-upside addition in the buyout market, following in the footsteps of successful buyouts by Russell Westbrook, Nicolas Batum, and Reggie Jackson.
Simmons has spent three seasons in Brooklyn, but his time with the team was marked by injuries and limited playing time. He will give the Clippers a much-needed playmaker and ball handler to alleviate pressure on star players Kawhi Leonard and James Harden. Simmons’ versatility as a 6-foot-10 player makes him an ideal fit for coach Ty Lue’s offense.
The Clippers have already made other additions this season, including Bogdan Bogdanovic, who joins Simmons in helping create more offense and shotmaking. The team is hopeful that Simmons will be able to create shots for teammates, contribute on defense, and provide size and rebounding help.
Simmons is nearing the end of a five-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers and is set to hit free agency this summer. He also met with the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier in the week as part of his decision-making process.
