Apple TV+ series “Severance” has returned after three years with a cliffhanger. The drama’s second season features a two-minute-long opening scene that appears seamless, but its production took months to film. According to Ben Stiller, the show’s director, the sequence was shot over several parts in five to six months, rather than being filmed in one take.
The scene shows Adam Scott’s character Mark sprinting down hallways of Lumon, a company where employees undergo “severance” to separate their work and personal lives. The decision to start the season with this scene came from an idea developed by Stiller and Scott.
Filming the sequence was technically challenging due to the use of a “bolt arm,” which captured Stiller’s movements. He described the process as a fun puzzle that required collaboration from department heads, who worked on the shot over several months.
Actor Adam Scott joked about his stamina during filming, saying he consumed a lot of Gatorade to run for extended periods, although scenes were filmed weeks apart. When finished, Scott admitted being exhausted but thought the experience was super fun.
Creator Dan Erickson addressed fan theories, stating that none have correctly guessed everything. He acknowledged some theories are “kooky,” but believes fans are starting to notice patterns and connections between episodes.
