A new US supercomputer named after Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna is set to be launched next year, providing a significant boost to artificial intelligence technology and scientific research. The system, named after the University of California, Berkeley professor who won the 2020 Nobel Prize in chemistry for her work on CRISPR gene-editing technology.
The supercomputer will be built by Dell Technologies under contract with the US Energy Department, and is expected to play a key role in genomics research. Its exact ranking on the TOP500 listing of the world’s fastest supercomputers has not yet been confirmed, but it will compete with other leading systems at national labs across the US.
The new system joins a tradition of naming top computers after Nobel-winning scientists, following previous systems named after Saul Perlmutter and Gerty Cori. The launch is seen as an important step forward for AI research and scientific discovery in the US, further solidifying Berkeley’s position as a hub for cutting-edge computing.
