Berlin Prepares for Gaza Protest at Berlinale

A polarized debate over the crisis in Gaza is set to return to Berlin’s red carpet as activists gear up to take their protests to the streets. The fragile three-week cease-fire in Gaza looks close to breaking, with Hamas accusing Israel of violating parts of the deal and postponing the release of hostages.

Pro-Palestinian groups have called for a boycott of the Berlinale, protesting the festival’s failure to publicly condemn Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over its war in Gaza. The groups claim that filmmakers who expressed pro-Palestinian views during the 2024 awards ceremony should be held accountable.

The Berlinale has stated that freedom of expression laws protect protesters’ right to wear or display signs and symbols supporting Palestine, but also prohibit hate speech and denial of historical events like the Holocaust.

In contrast, a group of artists and filmmakers plan to stand quietly on the red carpet tonight in support of Israeli actor David Cunio, who is still being held hostage in Gaza. An open letter signed by over 100 artists, including prominent Germans and international stars, calls for his release.
