Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin has launched its new rocket, the New Glenn, on a successful test flight. The first attempt was scrubbed on Wednesday, but the rocket finally lifted off from Florida early Thursday morning.
The launch puts Bezos in direct competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Blue Origin’s goal for this mission was to reach orbit safely, and the company achieved that objective despite some ambitious plans for the booster’s landing on an offshore platform in the Atlantic.
In a statement, Blue Origin said it had prepared rigorously for the flight but acknowledged that no amount of ground testing could replace actual flying. The company aims to refine its knowledge from this experience to improve future launches and apply those lessons to subsequent missions.
