Bhopal: Children Recovering from Calcium Carbide Ocular Injuries Face Long Recovery Periods

Bhopal’s children recovering from calcium carbide-related ocular injuries will face a long road to recovery. Doctors say complications are expected for a long time, and parents must stay in touch with their child’s doctors.

Fifteen victims are still being treated, 13 at AIIMS and two at Hamidia Hospital. By Monday, the AIIMS will discharge its patients. Surgery has been performed on critical children from across the state to implant an amniotic membrane. The condition can lead to chronic eye problems like dry eyes and persistent epithelial defects.

Early medical intervention is crucial for improving outcomes, but severe cases require extensive treatment. Severe burns are associated with a lack of blood flow to the eye and corneal opacity, indicating a poor recovery. Overall recovery depends on the severity of the burn, according to doctors.

At Hamidia Hospital, Dr. Kavita Kumar says there’s still uncertainty regarding recovery. The hospital will continue follow-up care for six months after surgery. Most patients have been discharged, but it’s premature to comment on their chances of recovery due to the varying severity of injuries.
