Biden Administration Unveils $123 Million in Massachusetts Infrastructure Grants

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced a significant grant package for Massachusetts infrastructure projects, with funding totaling over $123 million. The grants are part of the 2021 infrastructure law and will support various projects across the state.

Two federal grant programs, Reconnecting Communities and Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE), will provide most of the funding. These discretionary programs allow USDOT staff and Secretary Pete Buttigieg to decide which projects receive funding in a competitive process.

Massachusetts will receive funding for several projects, including:

* The Ashuwillticook Trail Extension in North Adams, a $17.3 million RAISE grant
* Complete streets improvements on the Southern Artery in Quincy, a $10.4 million RAISE grant
* A multimodal boulevard project on McGrath Boulevard in Somerville, a $43.2 million capital construction grant
* The removal of an arterial interchange on Center Street in Pittsfield, a $1.6 million Reconnecting Communities planning grant

Additionally, the USDOT has pledged funding for various other Massachusetts projects, including:

* Over 400 electric vehicle charging ports at Park and Ride lots and MBTA stations
* A complete street project on Hamilton Street in Southbridge
* Planning grants for Boston’s JFK/UMass station area and Mattapan Square
* Improved access to the Wonderland Blue Line station in Revere

The grant package is part of the Biden administration’s efforts to support infrastructure development and promote equity, sustainability, and safety in Massachusetts.
