Thousands of migrants who entered the US during the Biden administration using a special app are being told to leave “immediately” after having their parole status revoked.
The 900,000 migrants who used the CBP One app, which allows them to arrange asylum appointments, were generally allowed to remain in the US for two years. However, they now face prosecution if they stay in the country and have been informed to depart immediately.
President Donald Trump has long promised to increase deportations from the US. The administration recently renamed the app to CBP Home, which is now being used for “self-deportations.”
The Department of Homeland Security said that “cancelling these paroles is a promise kept to the American people” to secure borders and protect national security. However, experts say the new system will face logistical challenges.
Mexican, Honduran, and Salvadoran migrants are among those who received notices. The cancellations do not apply to migrants in two parole programs designated for some Ukrainians and Afghans.
