The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has ordered over 900,000 migrants who entered the country via the CBP One app to leave “immediately.” The Biden-era program allowed temporary entry and work permits to those who arrived in January 2023. However, the Trump administration has ended the use of parole for these individuals.
The decision reverses a central pillar of former President Joe Biden’s approach to managing border migration, following through on his campaign promise of mass deportations. Advocacy groups warn that such moves will cause labor problems and lead to significant costs for sectors relying on immigrant workers.
DHS has sent termination notices to CBP One beneficiaries but did not specify the number. Migrants are urged to voluntarily self-deport using the same app, renamed CBP Home. The program was a key component of Biden’s strategy to create pathways to enter the US and discourage illegal border crossings.
The decision also affects 936,500 people who had been allowed to enter with CBP One appointments by December. Over 532,000 individuals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela will see their parole programs end on April 24.
A federal judge has temporarily blocked plans to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for over 1 million Venezuelans and Haitians. The Trump administration’s actions have sparked controversy, with advocates arguing that the policies will harm migrants and their families.
