US President Joe Biden has denounced Russia’s large-scale Christmas Day attacks on Ukraine, vowing to continue providing military aid to the country. The attacks damaged critical energy infrastructure, leaving at least one person dead and six injured.
Biden stated that Russia’s goal was to cut off Ukrainians’ access to heat and electricity during winter, and to jeopardize the safety of its grid. In recent months, the US has provided Ukraine with hundreds of air defense missiles, with more deliveries on the way.
The US will continue to work with Ukraine to strengthen its defenses against Russian forces. President-elect Donald Trump also criticized the assault, calling it “brutally wrong” and saying that Christmas should be a time of peace. Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s pick for special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, emphasized the US resolve to bring peace to the region.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that the attacks achieved Putin’s forces’ objectives, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called them “inhumane”.
