Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark reiterated his support for the 5+11 College Football Playoff model, saying it’s in the best interest of college football. The proposal, which would feature top five conference champions as automatic qualifiers and 11 at-large teams, has gained momentum over the past few days. However, some conferences, including the Big Ten and SEC, have expressed concerns about guaranteeing more playoff spots for their own members.
Yormark emphasized that he believes the public’s support for the model is “critically important” and that it would bring fairness to college football. He also noted that his conference values earning its spot on the field rather than receiving a guaranteed bid. Other commissioners, such as Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham and TCU’s Sonny Dykes, have expressed similar sentiments.
The Big Ten and SEC will have more control over the playoff’s format in 2026 and beyond due to their new six-year deal with the CFP. The other FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua will meet on June 18 in Asheville, North Carolina, to discuss the future format of the playoff.
Yormark expressed confidence that a decision will be made soon and stated that he has faith in the process, which is designed to prioritize what’s best for college football. Despite some disagreement among commissioners, Yormark emphasized the importance of working together to find a solution that benefits the sport as a whole.
