Big Lots is closing its distribution center in Schuylkill County, affecting 505 employees. The layoffs will begin on January 6 and be completed by March 31. The move follows the company’s decision not to complete its asset sale with Nexus Capital Management and will impact all remaining stores in Pennsylvania, including those already closed earlier this year.
The distribution center closure is part of a larger restructuring effort for Big Lots, which has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and is working towards completing a sale by early January. Gordon Brothers, a joint venture partner, will handle the closing sales at both Big Lots and Party City’s stores nationwide.
Under federal law, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of major layoffs or business closures. The company has complied with this requirement, giving employees and their families time to prepare for the changes ahead.
