Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, 72, has been in discussions with the University of North Carolina about taking over as their new head football coach. Sources tell ESPN that Belichick is eager to return to coaching and is open to listening to people at both the college and NFL levels. The Tar Heels parted ways with Mack Brown last month after six seasons, leaving an opening for a new leader.
Belichick has no prior experience in college football but comes from a prestigious background, having spent 24 seasons as Patriots coach and winning six Super Bowls. His father was an assistant at the U.S. Naval Academy, and he grew up in Maryland, where his love of football developed.
The Tar Heels have already identified potential candidates, including Jon Sumrall, Matt Campbell, Glenn Schumann, and Steve Wilks, among others. However, Belichick remains a top contender, with sources indicating genuine interest on both sides. A decision is expected soon as the school seeks to replace Brown before the bowl game.
