Bill Gates Opens Up About LSD and Youthful Experimentation

Bill Gates, 69, has shared candid stories about his early years in his debut memoir Source Code, set to be published on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Among the stories, he recounts taking LSD for the first time as a teenager.

Gates’ friend Paul Allen introduced him to various vices during their high school summers, including scotch and smoking joints. However, Gates didn’t try LSD until his senior “sneak” day, when he was feeling uninhibited after earlier substance use.

The experience left him exhilarated at first but uncomfortable the next day during dental surgery. Despite trying it a few more times in college with Allen’s involvement, Gates eventually stopped using LSD due to concerns about its effects on his mind and memory.

Gates attributes his past experiments to Allen, joking that “it’s all Paul’s fault.” He also admits that part of his initial desire to try substances was to be cool and impress girls. However, he learned from these experiences and moved on.

The memoir provides a glimpse into Gates’ early years and his struggles with youth-driven experimentation. Source Code will offer readers an intimate look at the life of one of the world’s most influential figures before becoming a billionaire tech tycoon and philanthropist.
