Bill Gates Reflects on Autism Diagnosis and its Impact

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has shared his thoughts on autism diagnosis in an exclusive interview with NDTV. Born today’s world, if he had been diagnosed as a child, Mr Gates would have likely been classified on the autism spectrum. However, he was never formally diagnosed due to limited understanding of the condition back then.

As a young boy, Mr Gates’ parents sent him to therapy, which helped him realize his unique mental style could be an asset. He recalled writing a 200-page report in Class VI, far exceeding what other classmates submitted, showcasing his intense focus on tasks. This trait was initially seen as a strength, but also presented challenges in social interactions.

Mr Gates believes that while autism can’t be “grown out of,” it’s essential for individuals to understand their brain processing styles. The increasing awareness and diagnosis of autism have changed the landscape, allowing people on the spectrum to feel more comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment.

The Microsoft co-founder emphasized his need for alone time and self-care as a CEO, which often involves setting aside days for himself amidst busy schedules. He also discussed how he’s learned to adapt and manage his behavior, acknowledging that some traits associated with autism, such as “self-stimulation,” remain constant throughout life.
