Maher echoed this sentiment, saying that even woke individuals are sticking to their guns on issues like representation.
In 2020, Disney faced backlash after actor Peter Dinklage, who has dwarfism, expressed concerns about the depiction of dwarfs in the classic animated film. The company announced it would take a different approach in depicting the characters and consulted with members of the dwarfism community. However, some critics argue that the final product is unprogressive.
Maher took aim at Disney’s decision to use CGI dwarfs instead of actors with dwarfism. He claimed the studio prioritized avoiding criticism over promoting inclusivity. The comedian also mocked lead actress Rachel Zegler for her anti-Israel stance, stating it was a “suffocating persona” that left Democrats unable to express themselves.
The film opened in March with a disappointing box office performance, despite initial projections of $85 million domestically. Its production budget is estimated at $250 million, making it a potential box office bomb.
