Comedian Bill Maher has criticized his friend and TV creator Larry David over a recent satirical essay in The New York Times that compared him to Adolf Hitler. Maher, a longtime Trump critic, said the comparison was “insulting” and unfair.
Maher met with President Donald Trump at the White House on March 31 and reported his encounter on his talk show, Real Time with Bill Maher. David’s article appeared to mock this meeting by claiming he had dinner with Hitler in 1939. However, the essay did not directly mention Maher or Trump.
In an interview with Piers Morgan, Maher said that playing the “Hitler” card is a way of losing an argument and that it’s insulting to the six million Jews who died during the Holocaust. He also defended his reporting on Trump, saying he reported honestly without any ulterior motive.
The essay was seen as a personal attack by many, including Maher. In response, Maher stated that he doesn’t want to make this issue personal with David and is willing to listen if they can discuss their differences in the future.
