CBS News’ top producer of “60 Minutes” Bill Owens is exiting the network after saying he has lost independence over the show’s direction. Owens, who spent 37 years at CBS News, cited the impact of President Donald Trump’s criticism and lawsuits on the program as his reason for departure.
Owens’ announcement comes amid a long-running legal battle between CBS and the Trump administration. The network has faced intense scrutiny from Trump, who launched a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against “60 Minutes” for its interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
The lawsuit was widely criticized by free speech organizations as an attempt to chill media coverage. Owens had previously refused to apologize as part of a settlement, and CBS’ parent company Paramount dismissed the lawsuit in March.
Despite his departure, Owens expressed confidence that “60 Minutes” will continue to cover the Trump administration and future administrations. The show’s future is now under discussion with new leadership.
