A recent billion-dollar settlement in US courts over the use of pirated books to train an AI chatbot has left authors feeling that they won’t receive fair compensation for their work. Award-winning author Catherine Chidgey expressed her gratitude that the company, Anthropic AI, is being held accountable but noted that the payment offered to authors ($3000 per title) pales in comparison to the years of effort put into creating their works. The Society of Authors warns that thousands of local authors may be ineligible for compensation due to a restrictive US copyright office policy.
