Boston Celtics franchise owner announced on Thursday, Bill Chisholm, has purchased the team for $6.1 billion. The sale marks a record price for a North American sports team if approved by the NBA’s Board of Governors. Chisholm, 56, is a lifelong Celtics fan who owns a home on Nantucket Island but keeps its location private.
Chisholm attended Dartmouth College and earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His sale completion was facilitated by the Grousbeck family, which put the team on the market after winning the 2024 NBA championship.
Wyc Grousbeck described Chisholm as a “terrific person” with a passion for the Celtics and a commitment to the community. The new owner wants to be a great owner and has asked Grousbeck to run the team as CEO and Governor for the first three years, with Chisholm staying on as his partner.
Chisholm’s acquisition marks a notable addition to Nantucket’s summer residents, joining Red Sox owner John Henry, who purchased a waterfront estate in April 2022.
