Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, and Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO, have been in a public feud for years over their space ambitions. However, they once had a friendly dinner together in 2004. A picture from the meeting is currently going viral on social media, catching Elon Musk’s attention.
In a post on his Twitter account, Musk reacted to the photo by saying “Wow, a lot has happened in 21 years!” The two billionaires are not rivals in any earthly business, but they have similar space ambitions. Both started their respective companies in the early 2000s: Blue Origin was founded by Bezos in 2000, while SpaceX was launched by Musk in 2002.
Despite their friendly past, the two companies have clashed over various issues, including launch-pad lease opportunities and landing-pad patents. However, after Blue Origin’s successful launch of its New Glenn rocket, Musk has been sharing humorous posts on social media to dispel rumors of a rivalry between them.
Musk likened his relationship with Bezos to that of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly’s characters in the 2008 comedy “Stepbrothers.” He also shared a clip from the movie alongside a post, saying “Step Brothers is the perfect meme for @JeffBezos & me.”
In response, Bezos offered well wishes to Musk on SpaceX’s recent Starship flight. Meanwhile, SpaceX experienced a setback when its Starship prototype failed just minutes after launching from Texas, forcing airline flights over the Gulf of Mexico to alter course.
Despite this setback, Musk remains optimistic and has shared his analysis on what might have caused the failure. He plans to double-check for leaks and may increase the vent area in the rocket.
