Billionaire filmmaker Tyler Perry has revealed why he cut ties with his aunt and financially supported family members only when they found jobs. Perry, who is worth over $1.4 billion, believes in not providing handouts and wants his family members to take responsibility for their finances.
During an appearance on YouTube series “Den of Kings,” Perry shared that his aunt would constantly ask him for money despite being offered a job. He decided to put her in her place by telling her she had to leave her job if she couldn’t commit to it. This approach has stuck with him, even when raising his 10-year-old son Aman.
Perry has adopted a similar approach with his family members, sending them letters asking them to find jobs within 60 days of their mother’s death in 2009. All family members eventually found employment, and Perry wants the same for his son. The billionaire filmmaker believes that giving someone things without expecting anything in return can be detrimental.
Perry’s strict financial rules are not new; he has discussed them before on other shows. For Christmas, he gives his son only “books and Legos” and flies with him coach, a decision made after his mother passed away when Aman was just a child. Perry wants his son to learn that hard work is essential for success, not getting everything handed to him.
Perry’s financial philosophy has been put to the test recently, as he faces a $250 million sexual assault lawsuit. Despite this challenge, he remains committed to his values and wants his family members to follow suit.
