Bills GM Stands by Josh Allen’s Calls on AFC Championship Game Plays

Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane expressed his support for quarterback Josh Allen’s calls during Sunday’s AFC championship game, including a disputed fourth-and-1 play that resulted in a turnover on downs. The call, which would have given the Bills first down and extended their lead, was overturned by officials despite replay review.

Beane, speaking at his end-of-season press conference on Thursday, stated that he believes Allen made the correct decision in attempting the play. “I feel like he got that,” Beane said. He echoed this sentiment from the sideline during the game.

Another disputed call saw Bills safety Cole Bishop break up a pass to Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy, but it was ruled as an incomplete pass due to unclear possession. The Bills had previously challenged the play, which they believed was a good one.

Beane acknowledged that the use of technology to aid officials in spotting the ball is necessary, but noted that the NFL’s system is different from other professional sports leagues. He likened the challenge of implementing new technology to Major League Baseball’s adoption of a pitch clock, which began with experimentation in minor leagues before being adopted nationwide.

Beane emphasized that there is no clear solution for improving officiating in the NFL, and he is not criticizing the current system. Instead, he is highlighting the challenges of introducing new technology and officials from lower-level leagues to the top level.
