Buffalo Bills running back James Cook sat out a mandatory practice for the first time since seeking a contract extension this offseason. Cook spoke to reporters after practice, citing “business” as the reason for his absence. He was seen on the field during the practice session, even spending time with injured players on an exercise bike.
Cook’s agent did not return calls for comment, and the team’s management declined to discuss the situation. The contract issue has been ongoing since Cook went public with his desire for a higher salary. Despite this, Cook had expressed a willingness to participate in practice and be present for his teammates.
The Bills gave contract extensions to three other 2022 draft class members earlier this offseason: Khalil Shakir, Terrel Bernard, and Christian Benford. As the team’s lead running back, Cook is part of a committee that saw him on the field for just over 45% of offensive plays last season.
General manager Brandon Beane acknowledged the challenges in keeping Cook on the roster, but expressed hope for next year’s training camp that he will be practicing and representing the team.
