Billy Joel recently revealed in his new HBO documentary And So It Goes that he has made two suicide attempts due to an affair with a band mate’s wife. The incidents were sparked after he had an affair with Jon Small’s wife, Elizabeth Weber, when the three lived together on Long Island.
The affair led to the breakup of Joel’s band Attila, the end of his friendship with Small, and eviction from their home. Joel admitted that he was filled with guilt for being in love with someone else, feeling like a homewrecker. He struggled with depression and eventually attempted suicide twice, once leaving him in a coma.
Joel revealed that after his second attempt, which left him hospitalized, his ex-best friend Jon Small helped save his life. Joel credits Small with being one of the few people who forgave him for hurting him so deeply. The experience ultimately changed Joel’s perspective, leading him to channel his emotions into music.
The documentary follows a dramatic turn in Joel’s personal and professional life, which eventually led him to find love again with Elizabeth Weber. Despite struggling with mental health issues, Joel has gone on to have a successful music career, including hits like “Piano Man.”
