Country singer Billy Ray Cyrus performed at President Donald Trump’s inauguration festivities on Monday, January 20. However, his performance was marred by technical issues and a monotone delivery.
During his set, which included his hit song “Old Town Road,” Cyrus initially sang along with an onscreen video of Lil Nas X. Later, he attempted to play his breakout hit “Achy Breaky Heart” but faced difficulties with his microphone and guitar. The singer then decided to perform the song a cappella.
Cyrus’ performance was met with criticism on social media, with some users expressing concern about his technical issues. However, in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, Cyrus said he would not have missed the event even if his equipment had failed.
“I was there for the people and we had a blast,” Cyrus explained. “That’s called rock n roll!!” He also poked fun at himself, saying “You gotta fight” when technical issues arise.
Cyrus’ appearance was part of a lineup that included other country artists such as Nelly, Jason Aldean, Gavin DeGraw, Lee Greenwood, Kid Rock, and the Village People. Carrie Underwood’s performance was also affected by technical difficulties, with her rendition of “America the Beautiful” taking place in the Capitol rotunda after a delay following Trump’s swearing-in.
