Bioluminescent Waves Signal Ocean’s Woes and Call for Immediate Action

Bioluminescent waves have returned to San Diego beaches, but this phenomenon is a warning sign of the devastating impact of climate change on marine life. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has warned that these glowing blue displays are a clear indication of disruption in both land and sea life.

Bioluminescence is a natural process where organisms produce light, with 80% of deep-water animals possessing this ability. However, the recent appearance of bioluminescent waves on shore raises concerns about the health of our oceans. Shmorhun, Oceanography Discipline Lead Professor at Palomar College, notes that “our deep ocean is a light show” but most bioluminescent life lives in deep water.

The culprit behind these glowing waves is red tide, also known as harmful algal blooms. These invasive and toxic algae can produce neurotoxins linked to shellfish and marine mammal poisoning events. When they die off, they release hydrogen sulfide, causing a rotten-egg-like odor that affects coastal cities.

Warming ocean waters and increased acidity levels are catalysts for the growth of these harmful algal blooms. Global warming from burning fossil fuels is primarily responsible for this environmental disaster. To combat this, individuals can take action by reducing their collective carbon footprint, using renewable energy, implementing strict regulations on plastic production and disposal, sourcing food from ethical sources, and adopting sustainable transportation methods.

While bioluminescent waves serve as a warning sign, it’s not too late to act. Living sustainably and making conscious efforts to improve our environment can help maintain the health and safety of our collective ecosystems.
