BioWare Producer Believes Remasters Are Only Hope for Dragon Age’s Future

Former BioWare producer Mark Darrah thinks a remaster of the first three Dragon Age games is the best shot the series has at a future, but notes that such an endeavor would face massive challenges. Darrah believes someone within EA or BioWare must be willing to take risks and pitch another Dragon Age game with a clear vision.

Darrah’s comments come after BioWare’s attempted remastering of Dragon Age in the past, which never went anywhere. The producer notes that Dragon Age has a lot of potential for new games, but it’s unclear how to get started. Darrah also mentions that he wouldn’t know where to begin if he were still at BioWare, citing the series’ identity crisis and the lack of clear direction.

One issue with remastering Dragon Age is the proprietary engine used in the first two games, which would require a significant amount of work to update. Additionally, the studio’s internal struggles with resource allocation and the recent firings have raised concerns about the series’ future.

While some games, like Mass Effect Legendary Edition, have shown that remasters can be successful, Darrah remains skeptical. He believes that remastering Dragon Age 1 and 2 would be “unknowably hard” due to the technical challenges involved.
