Bird Flu Cases Reported in Washington State, No Outbreak in Clark County

Washington state has reported 14 cases of avian influenza among humans, with none confirmed in Clark County, according to local health officials. The risk to the general public remains low.

The Washington State Department of Health is monitoring H5N1, a highly contagious and deadly strain of bird flu that affects chickens and cattle. As of November 6, there were 11 confirmed cases and three probable cases among humans in Washington due to poultry exposure.

In October, the first human cases of bird flu were reported in Washington. However, officials have stated that there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the disease. One case with poultry exposure in Washington had unknown residence.

Avian influenza was first detected in the US in January 2022 and in Washington state in May 2022, in a backyard flock.
