A case of avian influenza, or bird flu, has been confirmed at a poultry market in Union County, New Jersey. The outbreak is not currently affecting humans, but it does highlight the risks associated with live bird markets.
According to health officials, the risk of infection from the H5N1 virus is low, and over 65 people nationwide have contracted the disease, resulting in one fatality. However, wild birds in neighboring Warren and Salem Counties have already tested positive for the virus.
The Union County market was closed after samples detected during a routine inspection on Wednesday confirmed the presence of the virus. The market will undergo disinfection and remain closed until further notice before being restocked.
The avian influenza outbreak has led to widespread egg shortages, causing prices to rise above $8 per dozen. Millions of chickens were killed in response to the outbreak, which highlights the need for strict biosecurity measures in the poultry industry.
