Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has detected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds across 30 counties. The H5NI virus has been confirmed in these areas, and an additional 32 counties are under suspicion due to reports of bird deaths. Affected counties include Adams, Allen, Bartholomew, and others.
The disease, common among waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors, has caused over 1,500 sandhill crane deaths since January in several affected counties. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that the public health risk is low, but individuals who work with infected animals or their environments are at higher risk of contracting HPAI.
To minimize exposure, members of the public should avoid contact with sick waterfowl and wildlife whenever possible. If removal of a carcass is necessary, wear a mask, disposable gloves, double bag, and place in a secure trash container.
