Bird Flu Outbreak Hits NYC Zoos, Hundreds Affected

A recent outbreak of bird flu has spread across the US, sickening chickens and dairy cattle, and prompting health measures in New York City. The Queens Zoo recently lost three ducks to the virus, while 12 birds at the Bronx Zoo were being tested for exposure. As part of a nationwide effort to combat the spread of H5N1, Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered all live bird markets in NYC and surrounding counties to close temporarily.

The closures aim to safeguard public health by disinfecting operations and selling inventories. Meanwhile, the Wildlife Conservation Society has taken precautions at its parks, including moving vulnerable species to protected areas and limiting animal exposure to wild birds. Despite the risks, many visitors remain unconcerned about the outbreak.

“It feels empty,” said a visitor who witnessed the separation of swans at the Queens Zoo. In contrast, another visitor from Myanmar expressed familiarity with bird flu and saw little concern in its impact. The Wildlife Conservation Society continues to monitor the situation, collaborating with agencies to ensure public safety.
