Bird Flu Outbreak in Ottawa County Michigan Poultry Farm

A poultry farm in Ottawa County, Michigan has been hit by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu. The disease was detected during an investigation by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) on December 16.

This is the first time HPAI has been detected in a Michigan poultry flock since May 2024, and the second case in Ottawa County since the disease was first detected in Michigan in 2022. MDARD officials say slowing the spread of the disease is crucial to protect animal health and public health.

The affected farm is currently under quarantine, and all birds will be depopulated to prevent disease spread. This measure also ensures the safety and integrity of the commercial food supply.

To prevent the spread of bird flu, farmers are advised to use personal protective equipment (PPE) and implement on-farm biosecurity measures. MDARD officials recommend keeping domestic animals away from wild birds, cleaning and disinfecting equipment between uses, and washing hands before and after handling birds.

Health officials say the risk of humans getting sick from the avian flu remains low, with no infected animals or products entering the food supply chain. However, farmers are urged to be vigilant for signs of bird flu in their flocks, such as sudden deaths, decreased egg production, or diarrhea.
