Two cats in King and Snohomish Counties have been infected with bird flu, potentially linked to recalled pet food. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is testing more cats after a public health alert was issued about Wild Coast Raw pet food.
The affected cats ate the free-range chicken, which had a best-by date of December 2025 and was manufactured by Wild Coast Raw. In Oregon, cats who ate the same product started showing symptoms of bird flu this month.
If your cat has consumed the contaminated food and is experiencing symptoms such as fever, lethargy, or discharge from the eyes and nose, contact your veterinarian immediately. No human infections have been linked to the food, but people can become infected if they come into contact with the virus in their eyes, nose, or mouth.
Pet owners are advised to check their pet food for any recalls and follow proper hygiene practices to minimize the risk of transmission. The WSDA is working to identify the source of the outbreak and provide guidance on how to protect pets.
