A mysterious bird flu outbreak has affected the southeastern Massachusetts region, with reported cases in Taunton, Mansfield, and other nearby towns. Local authorities have confirmed that avian flu is suspected to be the cause of death among the deceased birds.
The situation has prompted animal control teams to team up with firefighters to dispose of more than a dozen dead birds from Lake Sabbatia in Taunton. Flock owners are taking precautions, such as creating covered areas and fencing their properties to prevent wild birds from mingling with domesticated flocks.
MassWildlife officials have reported an increase in bird flu cases across the state over recent weeks. To protect themselves, residents are advised not to handle sick or dead birds on their own, nor bring pets into contact with wild animals.
Residents who come across infected birds should report them to MassWildlife for assistance and guidance. Meanwhile, flock owners like Erin Babbitt of Stony Creek Farm in Swansea have taken steps to segregate their domesticated birds from the local wildlife.
