US Sen. Tammy Baldwin is urging President Donald Trump to take stronger action against the bird flu outbreak that’s devastated the nation’s poultry flocks and dairy herds. The latest numbers show over 22 million birds affected by avian flu in the past 30 days, leading to a shortage in egg production and skyrocketing prices.
The average wholesale price for large eggs has increased by 218% since December, with farmers forced to slaughter infected birds millions at a time. Baldwin believes the lack of public communication from the Trump administration is sending a message that avian flu is not a priority.
Baldwin calls for a robust response and requested the creation of a plan to contain the virus through coordination with industry stakeholders. She emphasizes the need for agencies like CDC and USDA to prioritize communicating with farmers, ranchers, and veterinarians to strengthen biosecurity measures.
The situation has been exacerbated in Wisconsin, where avian flu has been detected in multiple counties, including Burnett, Barron, Washburn, and Kenosha. The virus has also affected a backyard flock in Milwaukee County. Baldwin’s letter to Trump calls for urgent action to contain the spread of the virus and protect the nation’s farmers and food supply.
