Bird Flu Pandemic Looms as Experts Warn of Mutating Virus

A bird flu pandemic is feared by experts due to the mutating nature of the virus, which has already spread from birds to mammals like cows and farm workers. The H5N1 strain can cause severe illness if it continues to evolve.

Recent cases in the US, including a Louisiana man who died last month after contracting the virus, have highlighted the growing concern. Genetic analysis suggests that the virus had evolved inside the man, potentially making it more severe.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has added bird flu to its list of ’37 priority pathogens’ with pandemic potential. The British government has also procured five million doses of an H5 protein-based vaccine in case the virus starts to spread among humans.

A new study published by Czech scientists suggests that the avian flu virus may be spread by the wind, rather than through direct contact with infected birds or their droppings. This finding raises concerns about the potential for rapid transmission and mutation.

The risk of a pandemic is exacerbated by the fact that vaccines against many strains, including H5N1, are still in development. However, leading scientists warn that an mRNA vaccine could speed up production.

Experts stress the need for immediate action to prevent an outbreak and for global cooperation to ensure equitable access to vaccines and treatments. They also call for transparent in-depth testing of pandemic response plans to share and incorporate different disease scenarios and immunisation strategies.

With the potential for a flu pandemic looming, scientists urge governments and regulators to take urgent action to address preparedness gaps and reduce the risk of severe illness and societal disruption.
